Barry Manilow is a singer and songwriter. He is probably best known for his hits "I Write the Songs", "Mandy" and "Copacabana (At the Copa)".
Manilow began singing at the age of 13 and changed his surname to his mother's maiden name of Manilow. His name was Pincus, but once his mother and father divorced he claimed his mother's name. He was not only singing, but playing the accordion and piano as well.
In Manilow's early career he was a jingle writer and singer. He actually wrote the State Farm, "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there". He also did the "Stuck on Band-Aid" song, and the McDonald's "You deserve a Break Today" as well. He worked as a pianist and producer accompanying Bette Midler at the Continental Bathhouse in New York City.
Barry Manilow dominated the charts in the 1970's with many hits and mult-platinum albums. In 1974, "Mandy" was released, in 1975 "I Write the Songs", and in 1978 "Copacabana (At the Copa)" was released.
In 1984, Manilow turned to a more jazz driven base and released, "2:00 AM Paradise Café" and then in1987 the release of "Swing Street" added to his jazz side as well. In 1985 and 1986 he created a pop album "Manilow" and performed his songs in several different languages. He had many singles released during the 1980's and created many hits.
In the 90's he released several more albums and his hit song "Mandy" was remade by a British boy band and the song reached number one. The boy band changed the ending and omitted the piano in the introduction. In 2004, Manilow released a live album, "2 Nights Live!" and a soundtrack of his musicals "Scores". He has produced many albums including two Christmas albums, and several live albums with a variety of genres.
Manilow has also dipped in to musicals-writing "Harmony" with Bruce Sussman. He has also appeared in two movies Unconditional Love and a television film based on Copacabana. He co-wrote the musical scores for Oliver & Company, The Pebble and the Penguin, and Thumbelina.
Manilow's latest album was released in January of 2006, "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties". This album was at number one the first week of the release. This is the first time that one of his albums has reached number one in 29 years!
