Virginia Cavaliers
There's some uncertainty surrounding the Cavalier roster this season, but one thing is for sure: Coach Dave Leitao has a stud player to lead his team while the rest of the roster shakes itself out. The player is Sean Singletary and he made a wise decision to return to school instead of staying in the NBA draft. Last year, he averaged 19.0 points, 4.7 assists and 4.6 rebounds and with him at Virginia, they'll have a competitive chance in their games during the 2007-08 season.
The rest of Virginia's fortunes lie with a number of talented newcomers who will have to contribute early and often for this team to be part of the upper echelon. Getting the attention is Calvin Baker, a transfer from William & Mary. He averaged 11.6 points as a freshman and should be a big help for the Cavaliers. The point guard position will see a lot of Mustapha Farrakhan. Has a senior in high school, Farrakhan averaged 20 points and made his All-State team. Other players the Cavaliers will be counting on are Jeff Jones and Sam Zeglinski. Jones is talented enough to earn his way on the ACC's All-Freshman team and will be counted on for quality minutes.
If these youngsters can mesh with the returning players and produce like they are capable, Coach Leitao's Cavaliers will be a tough match-up for anyone. Unfortunately, because of the ACC, the learning is pretty severe. However, by the time conference play roles around, Virginia should have an adequate amount of experience to attack the ACC without fear. Make sure that you the fan doesn't miss out on watching your talented team grow. There's nothing like watching a team come together while rooting them on to victory.
